I see my career headed in the direction of aviation, but until I get there, I see myself hopping around from job to job. But this is for a later point in this discussion, until then, this post is to address whether or not company loyalty is a thing. I think that company loyalty is in fact a real thing. If people enjoy the place in which they are employed, I would be inclined to think that they would be loyal to that place.
There are plenty of factors that play into whether or not a person would be loyal to their company, so I believe it is not entirely up to the employee to be loyal, nor is it entirely up to the company to be loyal to you. It is not that simple. In reality it has to be a give and take, there has to be a shared sense of responsibility and loyalty between each of the parties. In essence, they need to be loyal to each other. It is the company's job to be loyal to their employees, if they want their employees to remain loyal to them. Also it is important for the employees to be loyal to one another. For example, I have been by my mothers work many times, and there are weekends where she would have to work. However if we have family matters to tend to, or if something came up last minute, all she had to do was call one of her colleagues and they would trade their weekends. Also if my mom or any of her colleagues preferred to not work a certain weekend, they would swap their weekends around so that everyone would be as best accommodated as possible. It is this kind of support that makes workers and bosses alike, loyal to one another. It also yields a community sense in the workplace which is important as well. I have been raised to treat everyone with respect and make everyone feel like they are a human being. I believe that this is a huge factor when it comes to loyalty amongst workers. If a company treats its workers with respect and treats them as human beings instead of just employees or workers, they would be more likely to be loyal because the company made them feel like they were more than just an employee, or a worker.
When it comes to the question of non-competes and trade secrets, I do not quite agree with the way that they are implemented. I think it is unfair to not let an individual work for a different company doing the same thing for a year or to not allow them to hire a colleague for two years. I think that if this was the case, the company should have to retain that persons salary until they find a new job. I think that this would make these non-competes more ethical. I think that I would make sure that no person would copy my process or my company's process if they were to make their own company that sought the same goal as mine. There are many ways to solve the same problem and some ways are better than others. One way to find the optimal solution is through competition and collaboration, although it may be annoying to have to compete, it also forces both companies to have to refine or even define a new process that may be better than the old way.
I personally do not have a problem with job hopping, I think that it is ethical. I have always been told to do what I love, to follow my passion and to work doing stuff that I like. It is hard to know what you like doing if you have never done it before, I believe that it is okay to jump from job to job until you find something that you like to do. This is something that I will probably end up doing, I see myself working several different types of jobs in my lifetime, but this is just me. I cannot speak for everyone else, but these are my views on the following issues.
